Un manuscrit liturgique oublié à la Médiathèque de Rochefort

Un manuscrit liturgique de petit format tenant dans la main, contenant pourtant 431 feuillets (862 pages !), a été exhumé des armoires de la Médiathèque de Rochefort. Un spécimen de l’art accompli des copistes médiévaux. Composé pour sa plus grande partie probablement dans la seconde moitié du XIIIe siècle, avec un additif du XIVe siècle, il a la particularité de comporter en son début, une notation originale de plain-chant. Son contenu le classe dans la catégorie des bréviaires. L’hypothèse de son élaboration par les moines bénédictins de Malmédy paraît vraisemblable.

Discovery of a long-forgotten liturgical manuscript in the Rochefort Mediathèque Library

The size of a small hand-book – and yet containing 431 leaves ( 862 pages! ) – a liturgical manuscript has recently been unearthed from the Rochefort Médiathèque Library reserves. An invaluable specimen of the medieval copists’artistic trade. Most of its contents –including the remarkable original plain-chant musical score notations to be found at the beginning– probably date back from the second half of the 13^th century, with a 14^th century additive. These contents relate it to the prayer-book tradition, and we may safely assume that the manuscript was elaborated by the Malmédy Benedictine monks.
